What Certifications Do You Need to Be a Solar Installer in the USA?

The certifications you need to install solar in the USA depend on your state, the type of solar work, and who you’re selling to. Here is the complete picture.

Core Certifications

Electrical Contractor License: The most important credential. Solar is electrical work – all solar installations connect to the electrical grid. Most states require a licensed electrical contractor or master electrician to pull permits and sign off on installations. If you’re not an electrician, partner with one or hire one.

NABCEP PV Installation Professional: The gold standard. Three certification tiers:
– NABCEP PV Associate (entry level, exam only)
– NABCEP PV Installation Professional (requires documented experience + exam)
– NABCEP PV Technical Sales Professional (sales-focused)

OSHA 10: Required on commercial solar projects. Covers workplace hazard recognition and basic safety. 10-hour online course costs $30-$80.

EPA 608 (HVAC/refrigerant): Only relevant for solar-thermal or heat pump work, not standard PV.

State-Specific Requirements

Some states have additional solar-specific licensing:
California: C-10 (Electrical) or C-46 (Solar) contractor license
Florida: EC (Electrical Contractor) license or CVC (Certified Solar Contractor)
Texas: No specific solar license, but electrical work requires a licensed electrician

FAQs

How long does it take to get NABCEP certified?
The NABCEP PV Installation Professional requires documented field experience (minimum 58 hours for the Associate path, 12 months of documented installations for the full credential). Plan 6-18 months from starting to receiving the credential.

Is NABCEP required for residential solar installations?
Not legally in most states, but practically required for working with solar financing companies, commercial clients, and Tier 1 solar brands. Well worth pursuing before scaling beyond basic residential.
